Nursing home abuse is becoming more and more common. Reports show that nursing home abuse cases are increasing. Nursing home abuse can be physical, emotional, or simply neglect. Whatever the form, abuse of nursing home residents must be stopped and abusers need to be exposed and held legally responsible. The first step is recognizing the problem. The resident may or may not report abuse. Be aware of the warning signs which may include:

Depression or withdrawal from family and friends
Changes in behavior; mood swings
May seem frightened, teary eyed
Elder may flinch at movements
Elder may be frightened by opposite gender

Physical
and Sexual
Open wounds, cuts, bruises, welts, bedsores, skin discoloration or deterioration
Dehydration
Malnutrition
Loss of weight
Burns

Verbal and Emotional
Emotionally upset, agitated, or combative behavior
Extremely withdrawn, non-communicative, or depressed behavior
Unusual behavior (sucking, biting, or rocking)
Confusion or dementia
Complaints of poor treatment

Neglect
Poor personal hygiene
Withholding medication or over medication
Incorrect body position
Lack of assistance with eating, drinking, and walking
Unsanitary, unclean, or unsafe living conditions
Dirt, soiled bed, fecal or urine odor
Ignoring cries for help

These and many other warning signs often go unnoticed by family members. The worst thing to do is to ignore your suspicions. Even the smallest change can be an indication of a much more serious problem. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Make sure your loved ones are getting the care they deserve. If you suspect abuse investigate carefully and thoroughly.
